D2) Function of the cardiovascular system Flashcards
Delivery of oxygen & nutrients
Supply oxygen to the tissues
Supply nutrients to the tissues- done via the bloodstream
Removal of waste products- carbon dioxide & lactate
Waste products from the tissue to kidneys & liver
CO2 to the lungs
Thermoregulation
Exercise- change in blood flow
CV system maintains thermal balance during exercise by distribution & redistribution of heat
Vasodilation
Increases diameter of blood flow allowing more blood flow to pass through
Occurs in arterioles:
Increasing blood supply to the working muscles
Blood vessels near the surface of the skin to release heat
Vasoconstriction
Decreases the diameter of blood vessels reducing blood flow to tissue
Occurs in arterioles:
Decreasing the blood supply to tissue
Of the blood vessels near the surface of the skin to retain heat
Fight infection
Leucocytes
Fight infection
Part of the immune system
Destroy & engulf bacteria & viruses
Erythrocytes
Red blood cells
Contain a protein- haemoglobin- carries O2 to tissue- oxyhaemoglobin
Clotting blood- platelets
Parts of cells
Stop blood loss by creating- clot/plug
Becomes sticky when it comes into contact with air
Initial stages of repairing the damaged tissue
Plasma- coagulation factors- form fibrin- strengthens the platelet plug trapping RBC, WBC & plasma to repair the wound
