B4 & B5) Types of muscle contraction & fibre types Flashcards
Isotonic contraction
Muscles contract to create movement
Concentric contraction
Muscle gets shorter and fatter (due to the fibres contracting)
Eccentric contraction
Muscle gets longer and thinner (due to gravity)
Isometric contraction
Muscle contracts with no resulting movement
Fibre types- Type l
Slow twitch
Contract slowly
Less force
Aerobic activity- rich blood supply & many mitochondria
Low intensity, long duration sports
Fibre types- Type lla
Fast twitch/ fast-oxidative fibre
Fast contracting
Contract with great force
Resistant to fatigue- less reliant on oxygen supply by the blood
Fatigues faster than slow twitch
Suited to speed strength & power activities
Fibre types- Types llx
Super-fast twitch/ fast-glycolytic fibre
Contract rapidly
Large amounts of force
Fatigues more easily
Suited to anaerobic sports- depends entirely on aerobic respiration
High intensity, short duration activities
