What is a risk?
exposure to danger, harm or loss
What is a risk question?
- forms scope of risk assessment
- determines data requirements
- generic or specific
- e.g. what is the probability of a random animal in country A becoming infected with disease X?
Name the groups of hazard
biological, chemical, physical
What disease information can the OIE provide?
- disease status for different coutnries
- BUT voluntarily reported (so not necessarily reliable)
- infrequent reporting (2x /year)
- not real time
What is required for surveillance?
resources, systems, infrastructure, money
What needs to be considered regarding animal transport?
- ports/airports/compaies
- # animals in transport group
- multiple pick up points?
- collection centres
- rest points
What is needed for a horse to pass UK border?
paperwork (essential this matches animal)
microchip - may not have yet
passport - may not have yet
Who would you contact on importing animals from outside EU?
APHA (DEFRA if importing from within EU)
Is it the duty of a vet to give information to a client on importing an animal from outside EU?
No - advise them to discuss with APHA or go through another professional shipping company. We as vets can share information but they need to seek further info.
