Disease Flashcards
Communicable disease definition
caused by pathogens (viruses, bacteria, fungi & Protoctista)
can be transmitted from one person to another.
They are infectious.
Direct pathogen transmission examples
physical contact, ingestion, droplet infection
Indirect pathogen transmission example
via vectors
What are bacteria?
prokaryotes that can usually damage cells directly or release toxins
What are protoctists?
unicellular eukaryotic organisms, which can produce sexually and asexually
What are fungi?
eukaryotic organisms which cannot photosynthesis, therefore, are parasites
What are viruses?
Viruses are acellular, non-living particles,
can only replicate inside living host cells where they hijack the host cells to
replicate and then burst the cell to be released.
What are Autoimmune Diseases ?
when the immune system
mistakenly attacks its own antigens
eg In Arthritis, antibodies attack membranes around the joints
