Anaerobic Respiration Flashcards
Where does respiration occur?
In living cells
What does respiration do?
releases energy stored in organic molecules such as glucose
What is the energy released in respiration used for?
to synthesise molecules of ATP, which can be used as an immediate source of
energy
describe the first stage of respiration
glycolysis net yield of - 2 pyruvate - 2 reduced NAD - 2 ATP molecules
where does the first stage if respiration occur?
glycolysis occurs in the cytoplasm of cells
When would glycolysis continue in anaerobic conditions?
If oxygen is not available as the final electron acceptor
How does glycolysis continue in anaerobic conditions?
reduced NAD is re-oxidised so that NAD is available to accept a hydrogen atom again
Describe the lactate fermentation pathway in mammals.
glucose is converted to 2 pyruvate under conditions
- ADP being oxidised to 2 ATP
- 2 NAD+ is reduced to 2 NADH
then 2 pyruvate converted to 2 lactate under the oxidation of 2NAHK TO 2 NAD+
What happens to lactate produced in the mammalian fermentation pathway?
Lactate can be converted to glycogen in the liver or oxidised further to release energy, when oxygen is available
Describe the ethanol fermentation pathway in plants and fungi.
pyruvate + reduced NAD ĺ ethanol + carbon dioxide +
oxidised NAD
