associated with the external surfaces (think attached to organs)

implies an actual cut or slice
plane
implies an imaginary flat surface passing through the body
coronal/frontal plane
divides the body lengthwise into front and back portions. jackson hole hamburger
transverse/cross-sectional/horizontal plane
divides the body into upper and lower portions
midsaggital/median plane
divides the body into equal left and right halves
sagittal plane
when a cut is done to the left or right of the midline (think midsaggital plane but not on the midline)
