Asking questions guidelines
Get attention of the group,
ask questions before selecting student to answer,
before selecting get 50% raised hands or eye contact,
do not rephrase responses,
don’t ask students who you think will not answer correctly
Repeat the question or give hints when given an incorrect answer
Choral responding
Promotes group cohesion. Enables teachers to frequently monitor performance of each student and provide them with a high rate of practicing the correct behavior
Direct instruction
Is a highly structured teaching technology. Features include scripted lesson plans, small group instruction, fast paced instruction, grouping and regrouping based on achievement, frequent assessment (about every 10 lessons) and coaches/facilitators to support implementation
Students who are asked questions during DI are
Teacher selected-largely at random
With DI maintenance is fostered by
Teaching the skill until the learner is fluent and by providing ongoing frequent review
Progression of DI
Explain to students what they will be learning
Model it for them
Lead them through the task
Have them do it without your assistance
Correct errors immediately
Provide closure by tying it all together
Assign independent work to provide additional practice
