Dermatomes/Myotomes and spinal nerve plexuses Flashcards
Name the 3 primary germ layers
Endoderm, mesoderm, ectoderm
What does the endoderm create?
Internal linings of the body, and some internal organs
What does the ectoderm create?
Outer linings of the body; skin and hair
What does the mesoderm create?
All other tissues; dermis, heart, muscles, bones, blood, connective tissue, formation of internal body cavity
What does the paraxial mesoderm create?
The head and somites
What do somites create?
The sclerotome, myotome, dermotome
Sclerotome is
Bones and cartilage
Mytome is
Skeletal muscles
Dermotome is
Dermis layer of skin
What happens to somite cells that migrate anteriorly?
They give rise to the muscles/skin of the trunk and upper limbs (hypaxial muscles)
What happens to somite cells that migrate posteriorly?
They give rise to intrinsic muscles/skin of the back (epaxial muscles)
What is the main job of the posterior horn?
Sensory
What is the main job of the anterior horn?
Motor function
Posterior ramus innervates?
Epaxial muscles of back/skin
Anterior ramus innervates?
Hypaxial muscles of trunk and upper limbs
What will an injury to a posterior root cause?
Sensory deficits only
What will an injury to an anterior root cause?
Motor deficits only
What is a dermatome?
Single area of skin that is supplied with afferent nerve fibers from a SINGLE posterior spinal root
What causes the dermatomes of the lower extremities to have a pulled look?
Internal rotation of the leg during development
What is a myotome?
All of the muscles innervated by a SINGLE efferent anterior root – most muscles are composed of multiple myotomes
What happens if there is an injury to 1 segment of anterior rootlets?
This may lead to weakness of the muscle but NOT complete loss of function due to the muscle being innervated by multiple myotomes
What is a plexus?
Multiple spinal nerves combining to form 1 PERIPHERAL nerve
Femoral nerve
L2-L4 spinal nerves
Obturator nerve
L2-L4 spinal nerves
Sciatic nerve
L4-S3 spinal nerves
Tibial nerve
Branch of sciatic; L4-S3
Common fibular nerve
Branch of sciatic; L4-S2
Lateral femoral cutaneous nerve
L2-L3 spinal nerves
Posterior femoral cutaneous nerve
S1-S3 spinal nerves
