What is Delirium Tremens?
A
Acute confusional state secondary to alcohol withdrawal

After what time period does it occur? Peaks at what hour?
A
Onset 1-7 days post last drink, peak at 72 hrs

Classic Triad of symptoms?
A
Clouding of consciousness and confusion
Vivid hallucination and illusions – visual, often spiders or snakes
Marked tremor

Other symptoms?
A
Delusions Agitation Convulsions Autonomic overactivity: ♣ Tachycardia ♣ Hyperthermia and sweating ♣ Hypertension ♣ Tachypnoea ♣ CV collapse

Rx?
A
Diazepam - sedation or chlordiazepoxide (BZD)

What can be given prophylactically against seizures and arrhythmias?
