Define Adjustment disorder?
A
Prolonged severe and abnormal response to stress following a stressful event

Diagnosing adjustment disorder? (2)
A
Must occur within 1 month of a particular psychosocial stressor
Should not persist for more than 6 months

Aetiology? (70%)
A
Physical illness

Clinical features? (3)
A
Anxiety: irritable, increased arousal, insomnia
Autonomic arousal: palpitations, hyperventilation, nausea, sweating
Depressed mood: tearfulness, low mood (no biological signs of depression i.e. reduced appetite)

Main Rx strategy?
A
Psychotherapy

Biological Rx? Indication?
A
A/D or Anxiolytic
if symptoms are prolonged and severe
