D3.3 Homeostasis HL Flashcards
What is excretion?
The process of eliminating metabolic waste from the body
Name a major organ of the excretory system
The kidney is a major organ involved in excretion
What is the role of nephrons in the kidney?
Nephrons filter blood and form urine for waste removal
What is ultrafiltration in the kidney?
It’s the process where blood is filtered at the glomerulus in nephrons
Why is excretion important?
It prevents the harmful accumulation of metabolic wastes
Define osmoregulation
The control of water and solute concentrations in the body
What role does the loop of Henle play in osmoregulation?
It helps in reabsorbing water and ions, concentrating urine
How does ADH affect kidney function?
It increases water reabsorption in the collecting ducts of the kidney
What triggers the release of ADH?
Osmotic changes in the blood detected by hypothalamic receptors
Why is osmoregulation vital?
It maintains the balance of fluids and electrolytes, essential for cell function
