CTAF seperation Guide Flashcards
Determine if the traffic may be a threat what’s the rule ?
10/10/1 rule of thumb
• If another aircraft is within 10 mins, 10nm or 1000 feet of intended arrival or departure, this aircraft is likely to
be a ‘threat’.
• Once aware of the traffic threat, determine where the area of conflict will be.
Develop a “positive separation assurance” plan ?
1000 feet vertical; or
• Appropriate lateral separation
• Separation assurance must be maintained until the traffic is visually sighted and clear, or if a reliable position
fix is available and the other aircraft no longer presents conflict.
we have three options for ensuring positive separation
assurance in Class G airspace?
vertical, horizontal (lateral) or visual
separation.
You are 30nm to the south of the aerodrome and make an inbound call on the CTAF. Another aircraft responds and states they
have departed the circuit and are tracking to the south (towards you) climbing to 6500 feet what do you do ?
One option (depending on weather, terrain etc.) could be to advise the other aircraft you won’t descend below 4000 ft, and as k
if they could stop their climb at 3000 ft until both aircraft have passed. This would allow the 1000 feet of required vertical
separation assurance. As you get closer to the airfield, contact the other aircraft to determine their position from the field. If you
are now 10nm inbound, and the other aircraft states they are now 12nm south of the field outbound you would have horizontal
separation assurance and could continue your descent.
You are inbound, 10nm from the south to join downwind, and another aircraft is departing to the east. The other aircraft advises
they are climbing to 1500 ft what do you do ?
so you set 2500ft in the AAS to give yourself 1000ft of vertical separation assurance. Approaching
the field you visually sight the aircraft departing the circuit to the east. The visual position of the aircraft matches their radio
broadcasts, and they are tracking away from you. You can now continue to descend from 2500ft and apply visual separation
from the other aircraft.
