Cranial Nerves Part 3 Flashcards
Name the roots of the accessory nerve
Bulbar (cranial) root
Spinal root
What type of nerve is the accessory nerve?
Pure motor
Which root of CN XI joins another CN?
The BULBAR root JOINS the Vagus (CN X)
Which muscles do the bulbar roots supply innervation to?
Pharynx (EXCEPT stylopharyngeus)
Soft palate (EXCEPT tensor/palatini)
What do the spinal root supply?
Supplies sternocleidomastoid & trapezius
Via spinal nerves (C1-C5)
What type of nerve is the Hypoglossal nerve?
Pure motor
What’s the name of the hypoglossal nucleus? (Trick question)
Name the roots?
Hypoglossal nucleus
HAS a lot of nucleus
What are the functions of CN XII?
Supplies:
ALL inteinsic tongue muscles
3 of 4 lingual extrinsic a
ALL 4 infrahyoids & geniohyoid
Why is the hypoglossal nerve important?
Articulation
Mastication
Swallowing
How are the intrinsic muscles of the LARYNX innervated?
CN X & XI
nucleus ambiguus
Recurrent laryngeal nerve: supplies ALL intrinsic EXCEPT cricothyroid
Superior laryngeal nerve: supplies external branch. Innervates cricothyroid
What happens if there’s damage to the recurrent laryngeal nerve?
Unilateral VF paralysis
50% chance of recovery
How is sensory (GVA) information innervated in the larynx?
Superior laryngeal nerve (internal branch) external is for MOTOR
Mucosa of epiglottis and larynx
Via inferior ganglion to solitary nucleus
How are the extrinsic muscles of the LARYNX innervated?
FROM: V, VII, XIII
CN V & motor nucleus of V:
Anterior belly digastric/mylohyoid
CN VII & facial motor nucleus:
Posterior belly digastric/ stylohyoid
CN XII & hypoglossal nucleus:
ALL other extrinsics (infrahyoids/genio)
