Corynebacterium Diptheriae Flashcards
Microbiology of CD
Gram Positive Bacillus
Corynebacterium is avirulent unless
Unless it contains the Diptheriae toxin, which it gains by Lysogenic Conversion, It is coded by the Tox gene
A+B toxin model
B binds to heparin Binging EGF (hbEGF)
A= ADP Ribosylates EF2 and halts protein synthesis
Where does Diptheriae colonize
Oropharynx
What does CD form in the oropharynx>
Pseudomembrane
Why don’t you want to puncture this pseudomembrane
If toxin A gets in the blood, it can cause organ damage (heart and cranial nerves)
What is required for diagnosis
a culture of Diptheriae toxin
Treatment
antitoxin which neutralizes circulating Diptheriae toxin
When is anti-toxin not helpful
when the Dt is bound
Antibiotics
Erythromycin/penicillin
