Cognition and Emotion Flashcards
Cognition is
knowledge base and high cortical processing
Behaviour
everything that the organism does
Emotion
inferred behavioural state
What are the lobes of the brain? what are their main functions?
Frontal –> High Level cognition and motor
Temporal –> Audition, language, music, memory, emotion
Parietal –> Somatic-Visuospatial Representations
Occipital –> Vision
Orbitofrontal Cortex is in charge of
Recognition and expression of emotion
Limbic System includes
Olfactory Bulbs Cingulate Gyrus Thalamus Hypothalamus Mammilary Bodies Hippocampus Amigdala
What is cognitive appraisal?
knowledge and thinking affects our perception of events and memories
What is high level cognition?
Executive Functioning
What does the frontal lobe does?
Production of language (motor)
Motor Control
High Level Cognition
What is a leucotomy?
Severance of the connection between lobes
Define Working Memory?
use of information recently given. Can be manipulated in some way
What artery supplies the dorsolateral pre-frontal Cortex?
MCA
What artery supplies the medial pre-frontal Cortex?
ACA
if the medial pre-frontal Cortex is damaged how does the patient present?
Akinetic Mutism –> patient does not talk as there is ‘no need to’
What does the medial pre-frontal Cortex do? what if damaged?
Emotional tone and motivational interference. IF damaged can cause problems with self-awareness
What does the orbitofrontal pre-frontal Cortex do?
impulsivity and emotion recognition and response
At what age does the decline in executive functioning starts?
50 yo
What is executive dysfunction?
problems arising with damage to part of pathway communicating with prefrontal cortex
What is perceveration? is it a good thing?
Continue to do something that does not work expecting it to somehow work
What is the Dorsolateral prefrontal Cortex in charge of?
Set shifting, goal directed purposeful behaviour
What is neuropsychological testing good for?
testing Dorsolateral prefrontal Cortex
What is cognitive rehab?
the application of techniques and procedures and the implementation of supports to allow individuals with cognitive impairment to function as safely, productively and independently as possible in their environment
What are the two main cognitive interventions for cognitive rehab?
Environmental modifications
Compensatory Strategies
Environmental modifications in cognitive rehab are
Change in physical and social environment to facilitate greater independence and to reduce the impact of a person’s cognitive and behavioural difficulties
