Co-cyprindiol (Dianette) Flashcards
What 2 conditions can co-cyprindiol(Dianette) be used for?
- Severe acne in women refractory to prolonged oral antibacterial therapy
- Moderately severe hirsutism
A women comes in to see you with severe acne after taking antibiotics. You decide to give her Dianette. What would be your advise about Dianette?
The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) advise that due to the increased risk of venous thromboembolism with co-cyprindiol (Dianette), it should be discontinued 3-4 cycles after acne has cleared, and should not be used just for contraception.
How does Dianette compare with other COCPs for causing VTEs?
Interestingly, the increased risk appears similar to COCPs that contain desogestrel, gestodene or drospirenone.
COCPs containing levonorgestrel have less chance of causing VTEs.
Should a COCP be prescribed on top of Dianette treatment?
No.
