Certificate of Waiver (COW)
certificate issued to a laboratory to perform only CLIA-waived tests.
fume hoods
type of hood or barrier used in the laboratory to capture chemical vapors and fumes and move them away from health care workers and into a building’s exhaust fan system.
labile
specimen that is easily broken down
proficiency testing
sample tests performed in a clinical laboratory to determine what degree of accuracy tests are being performed. Testing samples are checked in the same manner as patient specimens.
provider-performed microscopy procedures (PPMP)
a CLIA term for those microscopic exams that require the expertise of a physician or mid-level provider qualified in microscopic examinations. The PPMP is part of the CLIA’s moderately complex category of tests.
quality assurance
process to provide accurate, complete, consistent health care documentation in a timely manner while making every reasonable effort to resolve inconsistencies, inaccuracies, risk management issues, and other problems.
quality control
measures used to monitor the processing of laboratory specimens. Include proper use, storage, handling, stability, expiration dates, and indications for measuring precision and accuracy of analytic processes.
Safety Data Sheet
document listing chemical safety information, product name, hazardous ingredients, fire and explosive tendencies, health hazards, emergency and first aid procedures, spill or leak procedures, protection, and control measures, and special precautions.
waived
term used to describe a category of clinical laboratory tests that are simple, unvarying, and require a minimum of judgment and interpretation.
Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA)
Safeguards the public by regulating all testing of specimens taken from the body. Came about due to public outcry after reports of deaths attributed to misread Pap smears.
