Q

Vit A def

A

Loss of skin and mm protection

decr nutrient abs

Decr repro

calves: decr bone growth and development

Rare on pasture as rich in vit A

Cause: bleached hay

Preventaion: give vit A/betacarotene to late pregnant cows during the winter

Q

Mg deficiency

A

Will appear low in the blood

NB for lactating

Cause: early spring lush perennial grasses that are low in Mg/Ca and high in K and N (usually from manure/slurry)

Treatment: give legume pastures first and provide salt for transporting the Mg into the cells

White muscle disease

In calves: muscular dystrophy, decr immune response in older

Q

Ca and vit D def

A

Caused by high grain diet in intensive fattening

Os calcaneous breaks down, as well as the achilles tendon– lameness

Requires supplementation

Q

Thiamine def

A

Caused by intensice fattening with grains- decr the rumen pH so thiaminase prod bact prolif

CCN

PEM

Molasses and corn gluten contain sulphate- decr thiamine utilisation

Fern and Equisetum- contain thiaminase

From xs urea supplemetation

Clinical signs: salivation, incoordinatio, convulsion, sudden death

Treat: 4L of vinegar or 20-40L of cold water

12
Q

Nitrate? Nitrite toxicity

A

Nitrate is naturally converted to nitrite in the rumen (this then used by microbes to amke ammonia) but when xs is consumed in the diet it is absorbed into the bloodstream

Caused by N fertilizers/ manure on grass that then gets into the water

Clinical signs:

decr DMI, Abortion, Methaemoglobinaemia

Q

Urinary calculi/ urolithiasis

A

Struvite from intensive fattening

Silicate from sour grasses

Water belly (bladder rupure)

Bulls

Treat with acidifiers (aim to keep Ca:P at 2:1)

Q

Bloat

A

Caused by high CP- alfalfe and clover leaves

Immature more so than the bloom stage

Tannin containing birdsfoot and vetch can break up the foam thereby decr the bloat

Higher risk in frost

Treat: keep legumes at 30-50%

17
Q

Acidosis

A

Incr concentrates i.e Starch in intensive fattening

Decr rumen pH to beloe 6

acute: death

Subacute: decr DMI, DWG and laminitis

18
Q

Ruminitis

A

Inflamm

Necrotic lesions

Incr fusobact necrophorum

19
Q

Liver abscesses

A

Decr DMI, DWG and condemnations

Treatment with forages around 10% and buffers

20
Q

Hardware disease

A

Heacy substances e.g wire and nail- can puncture reticulum- may damage other organs e.g the heart

Cause: traumatic gastritis/ reticulitis

Can use magnets to remove or surgery

21
Q

Hydrocyanide toxicity

A

Sudan grass and sorgum containing cyanogenic glycosides which are then converted to Prussic acid (HCN)

Incr risk when leaves are frosty

Cause: resp failure, death

Treatment: grazing management >30-40cm and hay
