Circulation Flashcards
Artery
- Carries blood AWAY from the heart under HIGH pressure
- THICK elastic walls
- Can contract and expand as needed
- Carry oxygenated blood except for the pulmonary artery
- Have a pulse
- NO VALVES
Vein
- Carries BACK to teh heart under LOW pressure
- THIN walled
- VALVES to prevent backflow
- Located within skeletal muscle, which propels blood upsward and back to heart
- NO pulse
- Carry deoxygenated blood except for pulmonary vein
Capillary
- Diffusion of nutrients and wastes between cells and blood
- Thin-walled
- So small that blood cells travel single file
- Blood travels slowly
Plasma
- Liquid portion of blood
- Contains clotting factors, hormones, antibodies, dissolved gases, nutrients, wastes
- 90%water
Thrombus
Clot
Serum
Plama without clotting factors
Calcium
Necessary for normal blood clotting
Damaged tissue and platelets release:
Thromoboplastin + Calcium
Stimulates
Prothrombin(inactive) —-> Thrombin(Active)
Stimulates
Fibrinogen(Inactive)—-> Fibrin/Clot (Active)
Erythrocytes
- Red blood cells
- Carry hemoglobin and oxygen
- Don’t have a nucleus
- Live 120 days
- Formed in bone marrow
- Recycled in the liver
Leukocytes
- White blood cells
- Fight infection
- FOrmed in the bone marrow
- Die fighting infection
- A component of pus
Thrombocytes
- Platelets
- Clot blood
- Cell fragments that are formed in the bone barrow from megakaryocytes
Sinoatrial Node (SA)
- Sets the timing of heart contractions
- influenced by the nervous system, hormones, body temp
Electrocardiogram
Can detect electrical impulses that travel through teh cardia and body tissues to the skin
What is the average blood pressure for adults?
120/80
Systolic number
Top number; measurement of the pressure when the ventricles contract
Diatolic Number
Bottom number; measure of the pressure when the heart relaxes
Atrium
receive blood
Ventricle
Pump blood out of heart
Lymph vessels
- Carry extracellular fluid(lymph) at very low pressure, without cells
Lymph nodes
- Filter lymph to rid it of foreign particles
- Maintain the proper balance of fluids in the tissues of the body
- Involved in the transport of chylomicrons as part of fat metabolism
- Returns lymph to the blood system via the largest lymph vessel, the thoracic duct.
Coronary
Renal
Kidney
Hepatic
