Arthropods Flashcards
1
Q
Arthropods
A
Insects, arachnids, Crustaceans
2
Q
Body structure
A
- jointed appendages
- segmented into head, thorax, abdomen
- More sensory apparatus than annelids
- Chitin skeleton
- gills and nephridia
3
Q
Radul
A
A Movable, tooth-bearing structure that acts like a tongue
4
Q
Digestive tract
A
- crop and gizzard
- gizzard contains chitin plates
- responsible for removing uric acid(solid)(Malpighan tubules) - adaption to preserve water
5
Q
Malpighian tubules
A
Where uric acid accumulates and then transported to intestine
6
Q
Circulatory system
A
- Tubular heart
- open circulatory system where blood leaves the artery and moves through interconnected sinuses/hemocoels
- Blood doesn’t carry hemoglobin or oxygen
7
Q
Gas exchange
A
- Internal respiratory surface
- Air enters the body through spiracles and travels through a system of tracheal tubes into hemocoels/sinuses, where diffusion occurs
- oxygen is carried by hemocyanin(copper core)
