chronic conditions 2.3 Flashcards
what is pernicous anemia?
a deficency of intrinsic facotr which causes a malabsoprtion of vitamin b12
what is anemia of chronic disease?
anemia chaused by chronic inflammation due to infections, autoimmune disease or chronic cancer
how does chronic infflamation cause anemia of chronic disease?
the infflamation produces reactive proteins that lock iron away in macrophages in the bone marrow prefenting it from being used during red blood cell production
why does the reactive proteins lock iron away in the macrophages during chronic infflamation?
because iron is essential for pathogen replication so the body does this to inhibit pathogen development
what is sideroblastic anemia?
defective protoporphyrin production which impairs heme synthesis
what is the cause of sideroblastic anemia?
vitamin b6 deficiency
lead poisoning
what is thalassemia?
a genetic disorder causing a decrease in globin chains which is a component in hemoglobin
what can trigger sickling events
- hypoxia
- dehydration
- acidosis
- stress (cold exposure, illness, exercise)
what is aplastic anemia?
failure of the hematopoietic stem cells in the bone marrow to produce blood cells
what is hypothyroidism?
an underactive thyroid gland which causes a decrease in t3/t4 hormones
