Chapter 7: Long Bones Flashcards
What are the four main parts of the long bone?
- Proximal Epiphysis
- Metaphysis
- Diaphysis
- Distal Epiphysis
What covers the Epiphysis?
Articular Cartilage
What is the Medullary Cavity? and where is it found?
It is a hollow chamber; found in the diaphysis.
What type of bone makes up the epiphysis?
Spongy or Cancellous bone.
What type of bone makes up the wall of the diaphysis?
Compact or Cortical bone.
What lines the inside of the diaphysis?
The endosteum.
What is the periosteum? and where is it found?
It is deep connective tissue, enclosing the bone.
Where is the metaphysis located?
Between the epiphysis and the diaphysis
What makes up the spongy (cancellous) bone?
Trabeculae
What are Osteocytes? and where are they found?
They are mature bone cells; found in lacunae.
What are the main characteristics of the compact (cortical) bone?
- Strong & Solid
- Weight-bearing
- Resists compression
What are the main characteristics of the spongy (cancellous) bone?
- Somewhat flexible
- Has spaces between trabeculae
that reduce the bone’s weight
What is the compact bone made up of?
Cylindrical structures known as osteons.
What is the central canal?
The center of the osteon; contains blood vessels.
What surrounds the central canal?
Layers of lamellae.
