Chapter 5: Epithelial Tissue Flashcards
How can epithelial tissue be classified?
Its shape and whether it is stacked.
What are the different shapes epithelial tissue can take?
- Squamous
- Cuboidal
- Columnar
What are the ways epithelial tissue is classified when stacked or not?
- Simple
- Stratified
What is pseudostratified?
Columnar tissue seems to be stratified but is actually in a singular line.
What is transitional epithelium?
Tissue made up of multiple layers of cells that can change shape in response to stretching.
Where is transitional epithelial tissue found?
It lines the urinary tract.
Where are simple squamous cells found?
- Blood vessels
- Lungs
- Kidneys
- Body Cavities
What are simple cuboidal cells specialized for?
Diffusion & Absorption
What are simple columnar cells specialized for?
Absorption & Secretion
Where are the simple columnar cells found?
They line many organs.
Where are the ciliated simple columnar cells found?
Digestive tract & Fallopian tube
Where are pseudostratified columnar cells found?
Epididymis, Vas Deferens, & Urethra
Where are the ciliated pseudostratified columnar cells found?
It lines most of the respiratory tract, except for the pharynx and larynx & can be found in the fallopian tubes.
What is the function of stratified squamous cells?
Protection
Where are the stratified squamous cells found?
Esophagus, mouth, & vagina
