Chapter 5: Connective Tissue Flashcards
What is connective tissue?
A type of tissue in the body that
provides support, structure, and protection to other tissues and organs.
What is connective tissue made up of?
Cells, fibers, and a gel-like substance.
What cells make up the connective tissue?
Fixed & Wandering cells
What are the fixed cells?
- Fibroblasts
- Mast cells
What are the wandering cells?
Macrophages
What do fibroblasts do?
- They make up the basic framework of tissues and organs.
- They partake in tissue repair.
What types of fibers do fibroblast produce?
- Collagen
- Elastic
- Reticular
What do collagen fibers do?
A major structural protein found in:
1. Tendons
2. Ligaments
3. Dense/Loose Connective tissue
What is areolar connective tissue?
a loose network of collagen and elastic fibers embedded in a gel-like
ground substance, allowing for flexibility.
What are types of loose connective tissue?
- Adipose tissue
- Reticular tissue
What does areolar connective tissue do?
- Fills spaces between organs
- Supports blood and nerve vessels
- Connects the skin to underlying muscles
What do the reticular fibers do?
- They make up reticular tissue.
- This is used to support soft organs.
What does adipose tissue do?
- Stores fat for energy
- Provides insulation
What is a type of dense connective tissue?
- Cartilage
- Bone
What types of cartilage is there?
- Hyaline Cartilage
- Fibrocartilage
- Elastic Cartilage
