Chapter 36 - Adrenocortical Agents Flashcards
Prednisone (I)
Glucocorticoids
Replacement therapy in adrenal cortical insufficiency
short term management of various inflammatory and allergic disorders
hypercalcemia ass. with cancer
hematological disorders
they give the body a chance to heal from the effects of inflammation
MORE ON PG. 581
Prednisone (A)
Enters target cells and binds to intracellular corticosteroid receptors, initiating many complex reactions responsible for its antinflammatory and immunosuppressive effects.
Prednisone (AE)
Sodium and fluid retention, amenorrhea
weight gain, immunosuppression
aggravation or masking of infections
impaired wound healing
Prednisone (D-D) & (CI)
CI:
Presence of acute infections
Diabetes (glucose elevating effects)
Acute peptic ulcers
D-D: Erythromycin
Fludrocortisone (I)
Mineralcorticoids
Partial replacement therapy in cortical insufficiency conditions
Treatment of salt-losing adrenogenital syndrome
Offlabel:
Hypotension
Fludrocortisone (A)
Mineralcorticoids
Increases sodium reabsorption in the renal tubules, and increases potassium and hydrogen excretion leading to water and sodium retention
Fludrocortisone (AE)
Frontal and occipital headaches
arthralgia
increased blood volume
anaphylaxis
Fludrocortisone (CI & D-D)
Severe hypertension
HF, Cardiac disease (^BP)
Presence of any infection, high sodium intake
Dont use with anticholinesterases
