Chapter 25: Microbial Diseases of the Digestive System Flashcards
plaque is caused by which bacteria
s mutans
Gingivitis is caused by which bacterias
- s mutans
- bacteriodetes
- fusobacterium
Peritonitis
bactereiodetes: pus
- caused by: porphysomanas gingivitis
what are the 5 stages of tooth decay
- healthy tooth with plaque
- decay in enamel
- advanced decay
- decay in dentin
- decay in pulp
what are the 4 stages of periodontal disease
- healthy gingivae
- gingitivitis
- periodontal pockets
- periodontitis
infection
long incubation period
intoxication
- food with mulitplied bacteria
example of intoxification
straphylococcus
whata are the symptoms of gastroenteritis
- nausea
- vomiting
- diarrhea/dysentery/constipation
- fever?
-shock?
what is the treatment for gastroenteritis
oral rehydration treatment (ORT)
or
antibiotics
Sttaphylococcal aureus
- causes: food poisoning
- superantigen
- Symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
- abrupt, violent immediately after eating a meal
s. Dysenteriae
- produces shiga toxin
- inflammation in the large intestine
- 20 bowel movements (dehydration)
- fecal oral route of entry
- common in daycares
- treatment: ORT, fluroquinolones
shiga toxin
Classic A+B
- inhibits protein synthesis –> absece forms –> scar
s. entrica
- food borne infection (poultry, beef, eggs, vegetables)
- pets –> can spread
- treatment: ORT
s. typhi
- spread through human carriers (gallbladder)
- fecal oral route of entry
- symptoms: sever diarrhea (short lived), then constipation, severe haemorrhaging, rose spots, extremely high fever
- treatment: cephlosporins
- example: typhoid mary
Cholera
- vibrio
- classic A+B exotoxin (triggers cAMP –>converts cells to pumps)
- symptoms:rice water stool
- treatment: ORT, Tetracycline
- example: Hatti 2010
how many strains of e coli is there
5
what are th 5 strains of E coli
- Enterio-Toxigenic E coli (ETEC)
- Aggregated (EAEC)
- EPIC
- Invasive EIEC
- hemohegic (EHEC)
ETEC
- 65% of traveler diarrhea
EAEC
- 35% of travellers diarrhea
- stacked brick
EPIC
- common in bottle fed newborns
- chronic diarrhea
EIEC
- dysentery
- similar to shiga
EHEC
- has become a syndrom
- HUS
Camphylobacter Gastroenteristis
Pathogen: camphylobacter jejuni
- symptoms: abdominal pain, diarrhea
- rare: guillina-barre-Syndrom (paralysis)
h pylori ulcer
- flangella
- exotoxin
- destorys phagocytes
- Diagnosis: urea breath, bacterial culture
- symptoms: peptic ulcers (15%), carcinogenic bacterium (3%), extreme belching
- treatment: metronidoazole
what does the exotoxin in h pylori do
- inbitis acid production
- produces enzyme urease
- digest urea into amonia
- changs pH to alkaline
c diff
- severe pseudomembranous colitis
- A+B exotoxin
- endospores
- nosocrominal infection
- Symptoms: diarrhea, life threatening colitis
- caused by long term antibiotic use
- Diagnosis: isolate bacteria
- common in daycare centers
- Reservoir: stool of many healthy adults
Mumps
- vaccine: MMR; no antivirals
- entry: respiratory tract (paratoid gland)
- incubation ( 16-18 days)
- symptoms: fever (chills), difficulty chewing (anorexia), difficulty talking, viremia
