Mayflower Compact (1620)
Government is formed by the consent of the governed.
Social contract
A theory that kings received their authority directly from God and that no matter how tyrannical or contrary to God’s laws they acted, they were accountable only to God and could not be removed from authority by the people.
Divine right of kings
Church government in which church members elect their leaders.
Congregationalism
The first written constitution in the New World. Outlined a more democratic government than the one in Massachusetts by not making church membership a prerequisite for government participation.
Fundamental Orders of Connecticut (1639)
Required parents to provide for the education of their children that they might “read and understand the principles of religion and the capital laws of the country.”
Act of 1642
Required every town of fifty families or more to provide a primary school for its children.
“Old Deluder Satan” Act (1647)
Revival that rekindled the spiritual life of the colonies
Great Awakening
A right that cannot be given by government because it is not government’s to give; it is a gift of God.
Unalienable right
A protest against government concentration and abuse of power in both the church and the state.
