A convention requiring lengthy balloting and eventual settlement by means of bargaining and compromise
Brokered convention
How a candidate is chosen in a state that doesn’t hold primary elections
Caucus
These were created to make presidential nominations more democratic

The first state to hold a direct primary
Wisconsin
Primary that requires participants be registered members of one party and vote for only candidate from that party
Closed primary
