Chapter 2- Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is light made up of?
Of wavelengths
Visible light has a range of what?
Wavelengths which are on a spectrum of electromagnetic radiation with violet the shortest and red the longest
What does chlorophyll absorb and reflect ?
Absorbs red and blue light most effectively and reflects green light more than other colours
What are the first stages of photosynthesis?
Absorption of sunlight - involves chemical substances called pigments
Why does chlorophyll appear green to us?
Absorbs red and blue light effectively and reflects the green light back to us
Oxygen is produced in photosynthesis from what?
Photolysis of water
What are one of the consequences of photosynthesis
The rise in the oxygen concentration of the atmosphere- known as the great oxidation event
Photosynthesis caused what?
Changes to the earths atmosphere, oceans and rock deposition
Why is energy needed in the production of carbohydrate?
To produce carbohydrates and other carbon compounds from carbon dioxide
What is the formula for plants to make carbohydrate?
Carbon dioxide + water –> carbohydrates + oxygen
How is the energy produced for the conversion of carbon dioxide into carbohydrates?
Obtained by absorbing light
What are the limiting factors on the rate of photosynthesis?
Temperature, light intensity and carbon dioxide concentration
What is said according to the concept of limiting factors ?
Only one of the factors is actually limiting the rate of photosynthesis
What is photosynthesis?
Is the production of carbon compounds in cells using light energy
