Chapter 2- Biochemistry- DNA Structure Flashcards
What are Adenine and guanine?
Double ring base
What are the 2 complementary bases?
Adenine and thymine via 2 hydrogen bonds
Guanine and cytosine- via 3 hydrogen bonds
What are thymine and cytosine?
Pyrimuianes- single ringed bases
What Are DNA nucleotides linked together by?
A covalent bond into single strand
How are nucleotides linked into a single strand?
Via a condensation reaction
What is the bond between two nucleotides called?
What is also formed when the nucleotides bond together?
Phosphodiester bond
Formation of 1 molecule of water
The successive condensation reaction of a nucleotide strand can result in what?
The formation of a long single strand
What is the double helix held together by?
2 polynucleotide chains of DNA are held together by hydrogen bonds between complimentary base pairs
Why must bases by facing each other?
To be able to pair, the 2 strands must run in opposite directions (anti-parallel)
Why do atoms arrange themselves in an optimal energy configuration?
This position of least resistance results in the double stranded DNA twisting to form a double helix with approx. 10-15 bases per twist
