Chapter 2 Flashcards
What is homeostasis
The internal environment point of stability
What processes are used to maintain homeostasis?
Negative and positive feedback loops
What are the 4 components of feedback loops?
Sensor mechanism, Integration/ control center, effector mechanism, feedback
What is the importance of the feedback component of the loop?
It detects the degree of change and tells the body whether it was enough
Which direction is afferent?
From sensor (affector) to control center
Which direction is efferent?
From control center to sensor (effector)
What is the main response of a negative feedback loop?
It produces an action opposite to the change that activated the system
What is the negative feedback loop responsible for?
Maintaining homeostasis
Which is more common feedback loop?
Negative
What does positive feedback mechanism achieve?
The feedback to control center promotes further deviation from original stimulus.
What are two examples of when positive feedback mechanisms are necessary?
Labour and blood clotting
