Anagen
First stage of hair growth; new hair
Catagen
Second stage of hair growth; hair shaft grows upwards and detaches itself from the bulb
Depilation
Removing hair at skin level
Depilatory
Caustic alkali preparation; removes hair by dissolving it at skin level
Electrolysis
Removes hair through electric current that destroys the hair root
Epilation
Removes hair from follicle; Ex tweezing or waxing
Hair bulb
Base follicle; provides nourishment, it’s thick, club-shaped structure formed at the hair root
Hair follicle
Mass of epidermal cells forming a small tube/canal
Hair papilla
Elevation at the base of the follicle to fit into the hair bulb. Papillaes are filled with tissue that contains blood vessels and other nourishments.
Hair root
Anchors hair to the skin cells and is part of the bottom follicle.
Hair shaft
Portion of the hair that extends beyond the skin. Consist of the Inner layer (medulla), Outer layer(cuticle), & middle layer (cortext)
Hirsutism
Unusual hair growth on parts of the body that normally don’t grow hair.
Hypertrichosis
Connected with hirsutism; Abnormal hair growth, having terminal hair where it normally grows vellus hair
Lanugo
Hair on babies; soft and downy
Laser hair removal
Intense pulse of electromagnetic radiation; a laser beam is pulsed on the skin using one wavelength at a time which weaken hair growth
