Chapter 17 - Part 1: Specific Defenses of the Host Flashcards
What is an activated B cell called?
plasma cell
What does an activated B cell do?
B cell produce antibodies which recognizes specific pathogens
What are the two types of T cells (using the CDs)?
CD8+ T cells (cytotoxic T cells)
CD4+ T cells (helper T cells)
What is the function of a T killer cell? What or who does a T killer cell kill?
Uses T cell receptor to destroy abnormal human cells by causing them to undergo apoptosis (requires an antigen presenting cell)
What or who does a T killer cell kill?
Destroy abnormal human cells
What are the 4 different T cell products that kill?
- perforin
- granzyme
- lymphotoxin
- Fas (molecule that enacts programmed cell death)
What is the job of any T helper cell?
Release signaling proteins that direct the immune system
What is the difference between a helper 1 and a helper 2 cell?
Helper 1: Release hormones that activate inflammation, cytotoxic T cells and macrophages
Helper 2: Release hormones that stimulate B cells to produce antibodies
What are the some of the alternate names for a TH3 CD4+ T cell?
CD25+ T cells
T s
T reg
Why are CD 8+ T cells important?
What happens when a CD 4+ T cell gets activated?
Release hormones that suppress immune cell activity and inhibit immune responses (anti-inflammatory)
what is the function of IL-1?
very potent pro-inflammatory cytokine, also a pyrogen
what is the function of IL-8?
attracts neutrophils to inflammation site
what is the function of IL-10?
What releases it?
suppresses immune response (anti-inflammatory) released by T reg and Th3
What is the only immune hormone that suppresses the immune system?
IL-10
