Social psychology
Study of how others influence our thoughts feelings and actions
Ex. Conforming

Attribution
An explanation for the cause of behaviors or events

Fundamental attribution error
Miss judging the causes of others behaviors as due to internal dispositional causes rather than external situational ones
Saliency bias
Focusing on the most noticeable factors when explaining the cause of behavior
Ex. Blame the victims
Just word phenomenon
See to believe that people generally get what they deserve
Ex. Mess with the bull you get the horns
Self serving bias
Can credit for our success and externalizing are failures
Ex. Bad things aren’t my fault
Attitude
Learned predisposition to respond cognitively affectively and behaviorally to particular object
Ex. Sassy
Cognitive dissonance
A feeling of discomfort resulting from a mismatch between attitude and behavior or between two competing attitudes
Ex. Have to write a report on soemthing u don’t agree with
Prejudice
Generally negative attitude towards members of a group; includes thoughts feelings and behavioral tendencies
Ex. I don’t like black people
Stereotype
A set of beliefs about the characteristics of people in a group that is generalized all group members; also, the cognitive component of prejudice
Ex. Black people cant swim
Discrimination
Negative behaviors directed at members of a group
Ex. Only hanging out with white people
In group favoritism
Viewing members of the angry more positively than the members of an outgroup
Ex. Only liking the popular kids
Outgroup homogeneity affect
Judging members of an outgroup as more like in the starburst the members of the ingroup
Ex. Labeling Iraqis towel heads to make it more acceptable to kill them
Interpersonal attraction
Positive feelings toward another
Ex. Thinking somebody is a baddie
Proximity
Attraction based on geographic closeness
Ex. Being closer is so better
Need complementarity
Attraction toward those with qualities we admire but personally lack
Ex.
Need compatibility
Attraction based on sharing similar needs
Ex. Both like making money
Romantic love
Intense feeling of attraction to another within an erotic context and with future expectations
Ex. Being in luv
Companion love
Strong and lasting attraction characterized by trust, caring, tolerance and friendship
Ex. Tru luv
Conformity
Changing behavior because of real or imagined group pressure
Ex. Everybody says yes so u say yes
Normative social influence
Conforming to group pressure out of a need for approval and acceptance
Ex. Doing drugs bc everybody else is doing drugs
Norm
Cultural role of behavior prescribing what is acceptable in a given situation
Ex. Personal space
Informational social influence
Conforming because of the need for information and direction
Ex. Thinking others are smarter than u
