Chapter 16: DNA Replication Flashcards
What is DNA replication?
Where DNA is replicated and repaired
What did TH Morgan find?
Tha genes are located on the chromosome and is made up of DNA and protein
What is transformation?
The change in genotype and phenotype due to assimilation of foreign DNA
What are bacteriophages or phages?
viruses used for molecular genetic research
What is antiparallel?
The structure of DNA
What is the semiconservative model?
Predicts that a double helix replicates each daughter molecule will have one old strand
What are origins of replication?
Where two DNA strands are separated and open up a replication bubble
What is a replication fork?
The y shape region where new DNA strands are elongating
What are helicases?
Enzymes that untwist the double helix at the replication fork.
What are single strand binding proteins?
Proteins that bind and stabilize single stranded DNA
What is topoisomerase?
relieves strain of twisting of the double helix by breaking and rejoining DNA strands
What is a primer?
initial nucleotide stands
What are DNA polymerase?
Enzymes that catalyze the synthesis of new DNA at a replication fork
How does a new DNA strand elongate?
Only in 5 to 3
What is an Okazaki fragment?
An enzyme that synthesis the lagging strand
