What is the difference between overtaking and passing?
A
Overtaking is when the car in front is moving.
Passing is when the car in front is not moving.

What are the six questions to ask before overtaking?
A
- Is the driver in front driving slower than the maximum speed limit?
- Can I overtake quickly enough without exceeding the max. speed limit?
- Is there oncoming traffic approaching?
- Am I being overtaken by someone behind me?
- After, can I return smoothly to the right?
- Are there signs or regulations prohibiting overtaking?

How is the overtaken performed?
A
- Light up the left indicating light to move to the left.
- Once you are in the lane overtaking, switch it off.
- When you can go back to the right lane, turn on the right indicating light.

What is the safety distance for pedestrians, cyclists, or two-wheel moped?
A
1.5 meters.

When is it allowed to overtake on the right?
A
- When the driver in front is turning to the left and made it clear.
But you can NOT drive on the verge when there is a solid white line, or in the bicycle lane. It is allowed to drive on a leveled verge. - When overtaking a tram > always on the right.
It is allowed to do it on the left when there is no space on the right.
When the tram rails are on the right (Coupure) then you are allowed to overtake on the left.

When is not overtaking according to the traffic regulations?
A
- When there is traffic or a queue: When moving to a faster lane.
- When there are information signs to choose a destination or a direction (e.g. Gent to the right, Brussels to the left).
- Within a built-up area with a road with at least two lanes in every direction.

Are motorcycles allowed to overtake?
A
Yes. They are allowed between lanes and queues (in motorways and express roads only on the leftmost lanes).
They can not drive faster than 50 kph and the difference with the other vehicle can not exceed 20 kph.
