CHAPTER 11: Overview of dentitions Flashcards
name the three types of dentitions
Primary dentition
Mixed dentition
Permanent dentition
when does primary dentition start and end?
starts at 6 months and ends at 6 years
when does mixed dentition start and end?
starts at 6 years and ends at 12 years
when does permanent dentition start
starts at 12+ years
which tooth starts the primary dentition?
the eruption of primary mandibular central incisors
which tooth eruption ends primary dentition?
the eruption of permanent molars
what is the mixed dentition?
mixture of primary and permanent teeth
when does permanent dentition start?
when all primary teeth are lost.
what are dental arches?
where all the teeth are present
how many dental arches are there? what are they called
two
- maxillary
mandibular
what is occlusion?
when the teeth of both arches are in contact
what are quadrants?
when the maxillary and mandibular are divided into halves resulting in four sections
what is a sextant
one sixth of the dentition
division into six parts of the dental arches
which teeth are considered anterior teeth?
the incisors and canines (the teeth present when smiling)
which teeth are considered posterior teeth?
pre molars and molars
permanent dentition is divided into how many types of teeth?
4
what are the four types of teeth called?
incisors
canines
pre molars
molars
which teeth are the longest teeth in the dentition and are called the “cornerstone” of the dental arch
canine
what is the function of the pre molars?
help grind and chew the food (specially the second pre molar)
what are the function of the 12 molars?
chew and grind up food
all crown of ANY tooth narrows towards what line? this is true for ALL types of teeth
cervical line (where the crown and the root meet)
what is contact area?
area of the mesial or distal surface of a tooth that touches the adjacent tooth in the same arch
(teeth side by side touching each other)
what is embrasure?
the triangular SPACE near gingiva between the proximal surfaces of two adjoining teeth
what is a line angle?
formed by the junction of TWO surfaces. the place where two surfaces of teeth are joining.
what is point angle?
angle formed by the junction of THREE surfaces at one point
how many line angles are there in total ?
8
what are the 8 line angles?
MO DO OB OL MB BB ML DL
what is malocclusion?
when the upper and lower teeth don’t bite together properly / close correctly.
- abnormal or malpositioned relationships of the maxillary teeth to the mandibular teeth
what is centric occlusion?
when the jaws are closed in a position that produces maximum stable contact
- jaws are centered and closed properly
how many types of occlusions are there?
three
what are the three types of occlusion?
class I neutroclussion class II distoclussion class III mesioclussion
Quadrant numbering for permanent teeth
quadrant# 1 2 3 4
teeth # 12345678
quadrant numbering for primary teeth
quadrant# 5 6 7 8
teeth# 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
difference between central incisor vs lateral incisor
central incisor is wider- squarish
lateral incisor is narrower, rectangular
what teeth numbering system is used in the USA?
universal/national system
letters from A-T
what teeth numbering system is used in CANADA?
ISO/FDI
quadrants of 4 and teeth numbering from 1-8
