Chapter 10 Quiz: Nervous System Flashcards
Delirium tremens
disorder involving sudden and severe mental changes or seizures cause by abruptly stopping the use of alcohol.
migraine
headache is characterized by throbbing pain on one side of the head and affects primarily women. preceded by warning aura - visual disturbance.
amnesia
disturbance in the memory marked by total or partial inability to recall past experiences
frontal lobe
of cerebrum controls skilled motor functions, memory and behavior.
antidepressant
prevents or relieves depression.
antipsychotic
neuroleptic is administered to treat symptoms of severe disorders of thinking and mood that are associated with neurological and psych illness.
hypnotic
depresses the central nervous system and usually produces sleep.
sedative
depresses the CNS produces calm and diminishes responsiveness without producing sleep.
anxiolytic
antianxiety drug or tranquilizer used to suppresses anxiety and relaxes tension.
dissociative disorders
occur when normal thought is separated from consciousness.
cerebrovascular accident
damage to the brain that occurs when the blood flow to the brain is disrupted because a blood vessel is either blocked or ruptured.
tetanus
lockjaw, acute and potentially fatal infection of the CNS caused by tetanus bacteria. acquired through deep puncture wound.
arachnophobia
excessive fear of spiders
encephalocele
congenital herniation of brain tissue through a gap in the skull.
peripheral neuropathy
peripheral neuritis is a disorder of the nerves that carry information to and from the brain and spinal cord. produces pain, loss of sensation, inability to control muscles of arms and legs.
thalamotomy
surgical incision into the thalamus. procedure destroys brain cells primarily performed to quiet tremors of Parkinson’s disease.
cognitive behavioral therapy
focuses on changing thoughts that are affecting a person’s emotions and actions. These are identified and then are challenged through logic, gathering evidence, testing in action or a combination of these.
hemorrhagic stroke
also known as bleed, occurs when a blood vessel in the brain leaks. Aneurysm within the brain ruptures.
dysthymia (persistent depressive disorder)
low grade chronic depression with symptoms that are milder than those of severe depression but are present on a majority of the time for two or more years.
concussion
violent shaking up or jarring of the brain. May result in temporary loss of awareness and function.
phobia
persistent irrational fear of a specific thing or situation that is strong enough to cause significant distress.
cerebral palsy
due to injury during pregnancy, birth, soon after. condition characterized by poor muscle control, spasticity, speech defects due to damage that affects the cerebrum. Common in premature or low weight infants.
Echoencephalography
use of ultrasound imaging to create a detailed visual image of the brain for diagnostic purposes to see midline structures of the brain.
Lumbar puncture
spinal tap, sampling CSF by inserting needed into subarachnoid space of the lumbar region to withdraw fluid.
Electroencephalography
process of recording electrical activity of the brain through the use of electrodes attached to the scalp.
Cluster headaches
characterized by intense pain affecting one side of the head and affect primarily men.
Multiple sclerosis
progressive autoimmune disorder characterized by inflammation that causes demyelination of the myelin sheath. disrupting the transmission of nerve impulses.
cerebrum
part of brain responsible for the highest level of thought.
hallucination
sensory perception experienced in the absence of external stimulation.
ganglion
cluster of nerve cell bodies outside CNS
plexus
network of intersecting spinal nerves, blood or lymph vessels.
receptors
sites that receive external stimuli from sensory organs
stimulus
anything that activates a nerve and causes an impulse
tract
bundles of nerve fibers located within the brain or spinal cord
dementia
general condition is a slowly progressive decline in mental abilities including memory , thinking and judgement that is often accompanied by personality changes.
paresthesia
abnormal sensation such as burning, tingling or numbness for no apparent reason.
encephalitis
inflammation of the brain
