Chapter 1: Intro Flashcards
Neurons
Basic Unit of the nervous system. Consists of a cell body, dendrites, and an axon.
Neuroscience
The study of the nervous system and its functions.
Behavioral Neuroscience (biological psychology)
The study of the neural bases of behavior and mental processes
Ontogeny
The process by which an individual changes in the course of its lifetime. (grows up, grows old)
Conserved
A trait that is passed on from a common ancestor to 2+ descendant species.
Somatic Intervention
Alter a structure of the body/brain to see how it changes behavior.
Independent Variable
The factor that is manipulated by an experimenter.
Dependent Variable
The factor an experimenter measures to monitor change in response to manipulating an independent variable.
Behavioral Intervention
Altering behavior/experience of an organism to find change in the body structure/function.
Correlation
Finding the extent to which a given body measure varies with a given behavioral measure.
Neuroplasticity
The ability of the NS to change in response to experience or the environment.
Reductionalism
Breaking a system down into increasingly smaller parts in order to understand it.
Level of analysis
The scope of experimental approaches.
Dualism
The mind is subject only to spiritual interactions while the body is subject to material interactions (Rene Descartes).
Who created dualism?
Rene Descartes
