Herbert Beaufort (Bouzy, Montagne de Reims)

Winemaker Henry Beaufort

The Beauforts have been making wine in Champagne since the 16th Century. In the early 1900s, Marcellin Beaufort became famous for his Bouzy still wines, and in 1929 he and his son, Herbert began to bottle Champagne wines. Today, Herbert’s son Henri and grandsons Hugues and Ludovic, continue this tradition. The family owns 13 hectares; 10 Ha of Pinot Noir and 3 Ha of Chardonnay, mainly in Grand Cru Bouzy, but also in Grand Cru Ambonnay and some 1er cru vineyards. In the wine-making, malo-lactic fermentation is blocked and dosage is kept to a minimum, being close to Extra Brut. All the wines produced are from their own grapes and the average age of all their vines is 45 years with the oldest being 95 years.

In the spring of 2013, what Champagne producer had their cellar robbed of wine and winemaking equipment?

A

In the spring of 2013 burglars stole 300 cases of Champagne from Selosse’s cellars, worth nearly $350,000. Interestingly they took 16,000 front labels, 12,000 neck labels, and 2,500 caps, which leads to the conclusion that they were also planning on counterfeiting the Selosse wines as well. Selosse is a Recoltant Manipulant.

(vinification) : terme champenois qui désigne un vin issu des dernières presses et qui ne participe pas à l’élaboration de cuvées destinées à la champagnisation.
