Ch26 Reproductive System Flashcards
Purpose of Reproductive System
to produce, nurture, and deliver gametes (sperm/ovum); to produce hormones estrogen, progesterone, testosterone
Testes
secrete/produce M hormone testosterone
Production of Sperm
Seminiferous tubules- spermatagonia enlarge to become spermatocytes->meiosis->sperm
Support, nourish, and regulate spermatogenic (sperm producing cells)
Sustentacular/sertoli/nurse/interstitial
Sperm anatomy
head-haploid set of chromosomes; coating on head (acrosome) helps penetrate the egg; midpiece/body, flagellum
Increase of testosterone=
puberty- secondary sex characteristics
Ovary follicles
hormones->one follicle develops-called graafian follicle-produces estrogen; follicle undergoes meiosis-> ova
Embryo growing in fallopian tube
ectopic pregnancy
Fertilized egg plants itself on
the endometrium (lining of uterus)
cells that remain on the ovary
corpus luteum
Corpus luteum produces
progesterone which maintains the endometrium if fertilized
If endometrium isnt fertilized
production of progesterone stops and lining of uterus deteriorates- blud
Ovarian cycle influences
Uterine cycle
Ovarian cycle
Follicular phase- produce estrogen 14th day ^LH=ovulation;
Luteal phase- corpus luteum=progesterone
Uterine cycle
Menstrual- no fertilization=endometrium->blood
Proliferative- new lining built bc of estrogen influence
Secretory- build up of uterine lining to nourish embryo (progesterone)
