Ch 9: Intro To Muscular System Flashcards
What are the functions of muscular system
- movement of body (skeletal)
- posture (erector)
- respiration ( diaphram and accessory muscles)
- body heat (shivering)
- communication (gap junctions)
- constriction or organs and vessels (smooth muscle)
- contract of heart (cardiac muscle)
What is excitability?
Capacity of muscle to respond to stimulis from nerve
What is contractability?
Ability to move a muscle to shorten with force
What is elasticity
Muscles recoils to original length after stretched
What is extensibility
Muscle can be stretched to o its normal resting length and beyond to a limited degree
Location of skeletal
Attached to bone
Location of smooth muscle
Hollow organs, blood vessels
Location of cardiac muscle
Heart
Shape of skeletal
Very long and had striations (strips)
Shape of smooth muscle
Spindle shape
Shape of cardiac muscle
Striation and branched (stripes)
Control of skeletal muscles
Voluntary and involuntary
Control of smooth
Involuntary
Control of cardiac
Involuntary
Muscle fiber
Single muscle cell
Endomysium
Surrounds muscle fiber
Perimysium
Surrounds fasciculi
Epimysium
Surrounds muscle
Muscular fascia
Surrounds individual muscles and groups
What are two myofilaments
- thick and thin
What is thick myofilaments
Myosin
Thin myofilaments
- actin
- tropomyosin
- troponin
What is sacromeres
- contracting muscle fiber cell
- one Z-disks to the other Z-disks
What are the characteristics of Thick myofilaments
- many elongated
- myosin head
- rod portion
- hinge region of myosin
