Anorexiant
drug used to control or suppress appetite.
BMI calc
weight in kg/height in meters (2)
Tenuate (diethylpropion) and Meridan (sibutramine)
- anorexiants
- inhibit neuron reuptake of dopamine and serotonin
- increase basal metabolic rate to move adipose tissue, decrease dietary fat absorption, and improve cellular glucose uptake.
- watch for hypertension and palpitations
Xenical/Alli (orlistat)
decreases absorption of fat and increases excretion in stool. (modifies behaviors to prevent symptoms).
important to supplement fat sol vitamines A,D,E, and K.
accompany w/ diet and exercise.

severe throbbing head ache on one side of the head that can have an aura or warning syndrome.
Caused by vasodilation and hyperperfusion of the brain vessels/ decreased serotonin levels which produce inflammation in the brain.
migraine symptoms
- N&V
- sensitivity to light and sound.
- worsens with activity
Triptans
selective serotonin receptor blockers. They cause vasoconstriction which relieves Migraine (abortive therapy)
Imitrex
- Triptan
- for migraine head ache
- take at first sign may repeat in 2 hours.
- Side effects: numbness of extremities, flushing of skin.
Ergots
block receptor sites in brain to produce constriction of cranial vessels and decrease pulsation in cranial arteries
