Cerebrospinal Fluid (F) Flashcards
Where is CSF located?
- ventricles
2. subarachnoid space of brain and spinal cord
How much CSF is commonly present?
100-160 mL
How much CSF is produced daily?
500 mL
List the areas of CSF from most amount to least amount
- cranial subarachnoid space
- spinal subarachnoid space
- lateral ventricular horns
- third ventricle
- fourth ventricle
How is H2O forced into the ventricles?
Pumps move sodium into ventricles to increase osmolarity. Chloride then pulled in to maintain electroneutrality
What is the relative amount of protein in the CSF compared to the blood?
Much less in CSF than blood
What is the double fold of pia mater vasculature surrounded by modified ependymal cells called? 1. What does it produce? 2
- Choroid plexus
2. CSF
What is the interventricular foramen between the body of the lateral ventricle and the third ventricle?
Foramen Monro
What is the interventricular foramen between the body of the lateral ventricle and the third ventricle?
Foramen Monro
What is the only way out of the ventricles for fluid? 1. Where does it go into? 2
- through the roof of 4th ventricle
2. superior sagittal sinus
What are the locations of the choroid plexus?
- floor of body of lateral ventricle
- roof of inferior horn of lateral ventricle
- roof of third ventricle
- roof of fourth ventricle
Where does CSF flow once in the 4th ventricle?
- Foramen of Luschka (lateral)
- Foramen of Magendie (medial)
- Central canal
How does CSF flow from the subarachnoid space to the superior sagittal sinus?
Through arachnoid villi
When CSF drainage is impaired what is the result?
hydrocephalus
What is the sign a hydrocephalus where there is a great deal of pressure buildup causing damage and is a sign of most likely fatality soon?
sunset eye sign or setting sun phenomenon
