C2B-KS27 Flashcards
Knowledge of national standards (e.g., UL, ANSI, ASTM, Factory Mutual) relevant to design and construction.
Underwriters Laboratories
Visit the Underwriters Laboratories (UL)website for more information.
Mission Statement/About — UL is a global independent safety science company offering expertise across five key strategic businesses: Product Safety, Environment, Life & Health, University and Verification Services.
UL provides product development as well as safety testing and certification Aids in the development of products with manufacturers to meet UL standards
Some of the UL products/systems covered under the Building Code Authorities section of the UL
website include;
- Exterior Walls - UL certifies exterior walls, doors and windows for fire-resistance ratings, exterior wall coverings, metal composite materials and external insulation and finish systems (EIFS)
- Fire Protection Systems — UL develops equipment standards and certifying products used in automatic sprinkler, standpipe and other extinguishing systems; portable fire extinguishers; fire detection and annunciation systems; smoke control systems; and
systems designed to assist emergency responders. - Fire-Resistance - UL certifies a wide range of materials, systems and assemblies used for structural fire resistance and fire-resistance-rated construction separation of adjacent spaces to safeguard against the spread of fire and smoke within a building and the spread of fire to or from buildings.
- Interior Finish Materials - UL investigates and classifies interior finish materials, trim and decorative materials used in buildings for their surface burning characteristics
including caulking and sealants, gypsum board, insulation batts and blankets, and wall coverings to name a few. - Means of Egress - UL certifies products used to comply with means of egress requirements, including products related to egress illumination, door hardware, exit signage and luminous egress path markings.
- Plastic Building Materials - UL tests and certifies plastic and foamed plastic building materials for a variety of applications
- Roof Assemblies - UL certifies roofing materials and roof assemblies for fire performance, hail resistance and resistance to wind uplift. Roof deck assemblies are
investigated for performance under internal fire exposures and for uplift resistance.
What does “UL approved” mean?
“UL approved” is not a valid term used to refer to a UL Listed, UL Recognized or UL Classified product under any circumstances. There are a number of requirements and guidelines that should be followed to accurately communicate a product’s UL certification.
A UL Listed product was modified in the field. Does this void the Listing?
An authorized use of the UL Mark is the manufacturer’s declaration that the product was manufactured in accordance with all applicable requirements, and was in compliance with those requirements when it was shipped from the factory.
When a UL Listed product is modified, retrofitted or altered in any way after it leaves the factory, it is not possible for UL to confirm that the product continues to meet the applicable certification safety requirements unless the field modifications are specifically investigated by UL.
It is the responsibility of the Authority Having Jurisdiction to assess the acceptability of the modifications or to determine if the modifications are significant enough to require one of UL ‘s Field Engineering Services staff to evaluate the modified product.
American National Standards Institute (ANSI)
Visit the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) website for more information.
Mission Statement/About — To enhance both the global competitiveness of U.S. business and the U.S. quality of life by promoting and facilitating voluntary consensus standards and conformity assessment systems, and safeguarding their integrity.
Definition — ANSI is a private non-profit organization that oversees the development of voluntary consensus standards for products, services, processes, systems, and personnel in the United States. —from the Wikipedia website
ANSI standard
- is a document, established by consensus, that provides rules, guidelines, or characteristics for activities or their results
- Example of an ANSI Standard:
i. ANSI/ISEA Z358.1-2009 - American National Standard for Emergency Eyewash and Shower Equipment - This standard establishes minimum performance and use
requirements for eyewash and shower equipment for the emergency treatment of the eyes or body of a person who has been exposed to hazardous materials. It covers
the following types of equipment: emergency showers, eyewashes, eye/face washes, and combination units.
ANSI A117.1 is the Standard on Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities
-ADA Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG) published by the Access Board references the illustrations and text of ANSI Al 17 (i.e. ADAAG is based on the ANSI Al 17.1
Standards)
ASTM International
- (formally known as the American Society for Testing and Materials)
- Mission Statement/About: is an international standards organization that develops and publishes voluntary consensus technical standards for a wide range of materials, products, systems, and services.
- ASTM has developed and maintains more than 12,000 standards
-ASTM standards have been adopted or incorporated into many federal, state, and municipal
government regulations.
-ASTM International publishes yearly the Annual Book of ASTM Standards
List of Construction Standards developed by ASTM (consisting of more than 1300 standards):
Adhesive Standards Building Standards Cement Standards and Concrete Standards Fire Standards and Flammability Standards Masonry Standards Road Standards and Paving Standards Roofing Standards Thermal Insulation Standards Wood Standards Steel Standards
Factory Mutual (FM Approvals)
a. Visit the FM Global website for more information.
Mission Statement/About— FM Approvals certifies industrial and commercial products and
services for companies worldwide.
-When a product or service meets the standards of FM
Approvals, it is issued the “FM APPROVED” mark to signify it will perform as expected and support property loss prevention.
-FM Approvals backs its evaluations with scientific research and testing and lists more than 45,000 certified products and services in its Approval Guide.
For what industry doe FM develop standards for?
- Develop standards mainly for the property insurance industry.
- FM Approved products are oftentimes required on projects at the request of the Insurance Company that is providing the policy on the building.
- Some of the products that may bear the FM Approved label include:
Fire department connections Wall hydrants Fire hose Fire doors Heat & smoke vents Skylights

ANSI develops standards.
False
-ANSI accredits qualified organizations to develop American National Standards. ANSI itself does not develop standards.
