Knowledge of project performance objectives (e.g., comfort control, safety and security, sustainability).
Comfort control - There are 3 main comfort control areas to be concerned with. These are related
to the interior environment.
- Internal air temperature — maintain the proper temperature for the intended use and occupant load through occupancy sensors, zoning, and thermostatic controls.
- Internal lighting levels and daylighting levels - maintain the proper lighting levels for the intended use and occupant load through the use of daylight sensors, occupancy sensors, and dimmable controls.
- Noise controls — utilize proper acoustical design for auditoriums, libraries, and classrooms, etc. Also properly control noise between loud and quiet spaces through the use of separation/isolation, metal furring strips, soundboard, acoustical tiles, insulation.
Safety and security — For the buildings occupants, including staff and visitors
- Building lighting at exterior including entryways and exit doors
- Site lighting in parking lot
- Access control: keys, cards, electronic
- Security Cameras: perimeter of building as well as interior
- Controlled check in area: reception desk near building entrance
- Alarms: fire, smoke, elevator, security
- Egress: paths of egress clearly marked, emergency evacuation plan
- Glazing: tempered in stairways, doors, and shower rooms as required by the building code.

Considerations for efficient Heating & Air Conditioning
- Install properly sized mechanical equipment
- Select high efficiency furnace
- Select units with Energy Star label
- Properly seal ducts to avoid “duct leakage”
- Consider radiant heat flooring for added comfort
- Install multiple zone system for more efficient use
- Install programmable thermostats
Considerations for efficient Water Heating
- Insulate hot water tanks
- Install gas water heater instead of electric hot water heater
- Insulate hot water pipes
- Install solar hot water system
Considerations for efficient Lighting
- Utilize daylighting to reduce requirement for artificial lighting
- Utililize compact fluorescent lighting
- Utilize LED lighting
- Install dimmer controls
- Install occupancy sensors
- It’s unlikely that you will see specific LEED terminology on the Exam. Sustainability or similar type of words are likely to be the terms used for those types of questions.

Select Energy Star appliances
Water Conservation
Name two ways of conserving water on a project, other than low flow shower heads and toilets. Know these.
- Low flow showerheads, toilets, and faucets
- Graywater system
- Rainwater Hawesting system
- Install drought tolerant landscape
- Drip irrigation/Sprinklers on timers and rain sensors
Resource Conservation
- Re-use of existing materials on site
- Re-use of recyclable materials
- Select locally manufactured materials
- Use rapidly renewable materials
- Use wood products that have been sustainably harvested council (ESC): Forest Stewardship
Indoor Air Quality
- Specify low/no VOC products and finishes
- Properly size and balance HVAC equipment
- Incorporate fresh air into the HVAC system
- Utilize passive ventilation
- Ventilate “wet rooms” (kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, locker rooms) to minimize formation of mold
- Install radon venting system if required
