BS6- Opganisation Part 1 Flashcards
Explain what is meant by the key term organisational structure
An organizational structure defines how activities such as task allocation, coordination, and supervision are directed toward the achievement of organizational aims.
State what is meant by span of control
The number of employees for who a manager is responsible for
State two benefits of a wide span of control and two benefits of a narrow span of control
Wide- there is a wider range of skills
-it allows for a bigger working team
Narrow- managers can have closer relations to staff
-it is easier to control
Distinguish between staff and line relations
Staff relations- an organization’s efforts to create and maintain a positive relationship with its employees
Line relations- the relationship between employees through the lines on the hierarchy
Describe how an employees skillet might impact the success of delegations
The higher the skill set of a employee then the more chance of being delegated they will have
Identify disadvantages and two advantages of delayering
Advantages- It offers opportunities for better delegation
-it is more motivating and empowering
Disadvantages-Not all organisations are suited to flatter organisational structures - mass production industries with low-skilled employees may not adapt easily
-Delayering can have a negative impact on motivation due to job losses, especially if it is really just an excuse for redundancies
Outline the relationship between delayering and increased delegation
If there is a flatter structure it can mean promotions are more meaningful however it can also mean there is more competition for fewer roles
Explain what is meant by the chain of command
a system in a military or civil organization by which instructions are passed from one person to another.
Distinguish between tall structures and flat structure
A tall has lost of different layers where as a flat is made up of far fewer
Explain two disadvantages of a flat structure
It can limit productivity
Can hinder employe retention
State three advantages of tall structures
- staff gain more support from their line manager.
- there is a higher degree of supervision as each line manager has a limited number of people they are responsible for.
- more opportunities for promotion which can lead to greater staff motivation.
