Explain what is meant by the key term appraisal
A formal assessment of an employees performance
Identify and explain one benefit of a business conducting appraisals
The main benefit to an appraisal is to identify an employees strengths and weaknesses.
Identify three sections that are likely to be included appraisal form
Key performance areas, self-appraisal, performance analysis, performance ratings and counselling
Outline the purpose of setting targets during an appraisal meeting
It gives the employee something to work towards and also provide something to talk about in the next meeting, seeing if they’ve met their goals or not
Identify one advantage of an employee completing a self-assessment prior to an appraisal meeting.
One advantages it allows for the employee and manager to compare the thoughts and the employees true views on how they think they’re doing
Explain what is meant by 360° appraisal
360° appraisal is very different to the usual one-to-one appraisal process. It involves receiving feedback from several people.
Identify and explain one disadvantage of peer assessment as a method of appraisal
One disadvantage is the assessor may be biased due to either having a friendship with the employees or having past differences leading to an unfair appraisal
Identify three reasons that an appraisal could be ineffective
Biased assessor
Assess has inadequate training
The employee may not be bothered
Identify formulas for absenteeism, labour turnover, lateness and productivity
Absenteeism= total days absent in the month x100 / total available working days in the month
Labour turnover= number of employees leaving during the year/ average number of employed during the year x100

Lateness= total number of late arrivals x100 / total number of schedule the attendance
Productivity= output/ average number of employees
State three disadvantages of using quantitive data alone to assess workforce for performance
It does not take into account the style of work
Some work can’t be put in quantitive data
It will limit the extent of what you can do with it
Explain one benefit to employees of improving their performance
They will gain more praise from other employees and managers and therefore feel more motivated
