A breast assessment (self) should be done when?
Every month, 2-3 days after menstrual cycle, or every month at the same time for post-menopausal ladies.

How should we position someone for a breast examination?
Arms at side, arms over head, for augmented breasts = hands pressed against hips or pushing together in front of chest.)

What do we look for?
Skin characteristics, size, contour, symmetry, tanner stage (child/teen), abnormal things are : lesions, dimpling, retractions, discharge, nipple changes, peau d’orange.
What is peau d’orange?
Skin that looks like an orange! Is pitted and is..orange!
Boob Symmetry - rounded and slightly ___.
Asymmetric. Abnormal would be if they were totally different!
Normal breast color is …
uniform in color, smooth and intact, with some striae.
Abnormal coloring is …
localized discoloration, dimpling, or includes retractions of the skin.
Nipples and Areola - should be…
round or oval, equal, everted, light pink to dark brown, without asymmetry, masses, lesions, inverted-ness, discharge, crusts or cracks.
Males with boobs =

Breasts get bigger over time. T/F?

What are the palpation positions for the breast?
Sitting/supine (arm above head/pillow under shoulder.)
What is the sequence of palpation for the breast?
We check the 4 quadrants, the tail of spence (right up by the armpit), nipple and lymph nodes (axillary.)
