brain networks Flashcards
Motor circuit, oculomotor circuit, associative circuits, limbic circuit
large-scale networks, involving several brain regions and characterized by long-distance connections
large-scale networks play essential role in
integration of cognitive functions
Those with most attention on them are the Default Mode Network, Central Executive Network and Salience Network
Default Mode Network
network that is active when a subject is awake and at rest (not cognitively activated but daydreaming or spontaneous thought)
default mode network inhibited by
Inhibited by stimuli that activate exogenous attention
Inhibited by stimuli that activate exogenous attention
memory tasks (ie. Active retrieval of memories) and in social behavior
principle nodes - default mode network
Posterior cingulate cortex
Medial prefrontal cortex
Angular gyrus
default mode network - Includes other brain structures forming
additional “subsystems”
default mode network - one of more relevant is the subsystem with the
mesial portions of the temporal lobes (hippocampus, parahippocampal gyrus), which is active in memory tasks
Central Executive Network
supports cognitively demanding functions, which include working memory, problem solving, and decision making
CEN main nodes are
Dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC)
Posterior parietal cortex
Salience Network
activated in response to behaviorally relevant stimuli; also plays a role in teh integration of the emotional aspects of experience and in rewards processes
Salience Network main nodes
Anterior cingulate cortex
Anterior insula
